Kwila is the best-looking and longest-lasting option, though it bleeds tannin early on and likes regular oiling. Treated pine is the budget-friendly choice and takes stain nicely. Composite costs more upfront but needs almost no upkeep after. We bring samples along so you can compare all three in person.
There are too many variables to price without seeing the site — height, ground conditions, material choice, stairs, balustrades and access all shift the number significantly. We measure up in person and give you a firm price in writing.
Yes — plenty of properties around Aokautere and Summerhill are built on exactly that. A slope calls for deeper piles at the low end, taller posts and usually stairs and a balustrade, so expect a higher cost than the same deck on flat ground.
The substructure should outlive the surface by a long way. Correctly specified H4 piles and H3.2 framing last for decades — the boards are what eventually need replacing. Both kwila and composite can go 20-plus years; pine less if it’s never maintained.
Yes — and on any deck over a metre high, a balustrade isn’t optional, it’s required. We build stairs with even, consistent rises and code-compliant handrails in timber, powder-coated aluminium or glass.
Often, yes. If the substructure’s still sound, we can replace the boards, add stairs, or extend it outward. If the framing or piles have already rotted, a rebuild is usually the smarter spend — we’ll tell you straight which situation you’re in.
